Athletics
Welcome to Brearley Athletics!
The Brearley Athletics Program offers students in Classes V–XII the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment. The program strives to provide a balanced approach, fostering competition at a high level while remaining supportive.
While we emphasize sport-specific skill development, an equally important component of our program is to instill invaluable life skills such as collaboration, competitiveness, communication, sportsmanship and time management.
We foster an environment for our students to challenge themselves and support their teammates. We celebrate the importance of hard work, commitment and determination while understanding and providing the necessary skill development for social and emotional learning.
Through risk taking and experiences on a Brearley team, our athletes learn to be more resilient, self-aware, confident, strong-willed, respectful, socially aware and compassionate leaders of our community.
Brearley is founding member of the Athletic Association of Independent Schools (AAIS). Founded in 2014, the AAIS is a girls' varsity conference of 11 leading independent schools in New York City, both coed and girls-only. AAIS athletes have achieved success in athletics at the collegiate and postcollegiate level.
By truth and toil united,
The Brearley Athletics Team
Statement of Inclusion
At Brearley athletics, we believe that diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are not just words, but principles that shape our athletics program and enrich the experiences of our students. Our deep commitment to fostering an inclusive environment is at the core of everything we do.
In our athletics program, every student has the right to feel valued, respected and safe, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or socioeconomic status. We actively work to identify and eliminate discrimination, prejudice and bias in all forms and ensure our students feel a strong sense of belonging when participating on our sports teams.
We firmly believe that diversity in our teams contributes to success on and off the field. By embracing different perspectives, experiences and cultures, we strengthen our community, broaden our horizons and prepare our students for the diverse world beyond high school.
We actively promote sportsmanship, teamwork and mutual respect among our athletes, coaches and spectators, fostering an atmosphere where everyone feels encouraged to grow and learn.
Our coaches and staff are trained to recognize and address issues related to diversity and inclusion, creating a supportive network for students to lean on when needed. We welcome open dialogue, constructive feedback and suggestions from our athletes and their families to continuously improve our program and make it more inclusive.
Together, we stand committed to building an athletic community where all students feel valued and empowered to achieve their full potential, not only as athletes but as compassionate and well-rounded Brearley students.

Handbook
Parent/Athlete Handbook
The Brearley Athletics Department designed this handbook to give athletes and their parents/guardians access to critical information regarding participation in athletics at our school. We hope that this document clarifies expectations for our athletes and that it will be a useful resource. This handbook is designed to support but not replace direct communication. In addition, the Director of Athletics is always available to provide any assistance you may require.
Upper School Teams
There are 16 teams stretching across the three seasons for Upper School students to compete on.
Middle School Teams
The V/VI Athletic Program is designed to be introductory in nature by placing an emphasis on sport-specific skill development. The V/VI Program provides students with an opportunity to experience a variety of teams and individual sports in an intramural and interscholastic setting. There are 19 different teams.
