Dance
Our dance studios at Brearley are always full of movement—leaping, stretching, bending and skipping. Our students are encouraged in their creativity and self-expression at the same time as they learn to appreciate traditional dances from around the world. Starting with our youngest students, the dance curriculum focuses on locomotive skills and progresses as students grow to a full expression of creativity, artistry and athleticism.
Performing for
the School
The curriculum in Classes K through IV focuses on the use of body shape, patterns in space and speed of movement, and every year Class IV prepares and presents a dance program for Lower School Assembly. The Middle School performs at an assembly in the winter, and Class VIII has a special opportunity each year to learn from a visiting African dance artist. In Upper School, students participating in Varsity Dance work on all aspects of producing a yearly show, with choreography by both faculty and students. Elective dance classes are also offered to Classes IX through XII, including modern dance, jazz and choreography classes.
An Evening
of Dance
Varsity Dance hosts an annual production for the entire Brearley community, An Evening of Dance, held every February. Performers from Classes V/VI, VII/VIII and the Upper School are featured, along with special guests. Choreography is done by Brearley faculty, visiting guest artists and Upper School students across various styles including hip-hop, contemporary and modern dance.
