Class IX Math Sections

GEOMETRY: Geometry provides students with both an intuitive and analytical approach to the study of the mathematics of shapes and space. In this course, students use logic and deductive proofs to study topics such as congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, similarity, coordinate geometry, and circles. Students also study right-triangle trigonometry, area, and volume. Graphing calculators (TI-84s) allow students to use a variety of approaches when solving problems. Algebraic problem-solving skills are reinforced throughout.

GEOMETRY EXTENDED: Investigation into geometric concepts through a more abstract lens. The course will explore the properties of triangles, polygons, and circles from first principles through the use of logic and deductive proofs, geometry of motion, and algebra of transformations to inspire a more general discussion of mappings and functions. Other topics may include conic sections, loci and constructions, non-Euclidean geometry, and elementary topology. Interactive geometric and graphical software (Geometer’s Sketchpad) will be used to extend and explore concepts and provide an introduction to Algebra II through mappings and functions.
