Class X Modern Language Descriptions

FRENCH III COMPREHENSIVE (For students who began in Class VII): This course refines students’ language skills through immersion and intensive practice of increasingly advanced grammar and vocabulary with an emphasis on speaking, reading, and writing. It presents students with a variety of materials on French and Francophone society and culture, including diverse media and literary and expository texts such as Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

FRENCH III: Expansion and refinement of speaking, writing, and reading skills through the analysis of literary works such as Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran. Students deepen their understanding of French society and culture while expanding their vocabulary, mastering the study of grammar, and participating in the analysis and discussion of current events.

MANDARIN III: In this course, students explore various genres—short stories, news articles, essays, and TV shows—while discussing current events and researching Chinese history, culture, and social issues. Students continue the study of increasingly advanced syntax and vocabulary and produce analytical and creative writing on various topics.

SPANISH II COMPREHENSIVE-BEGINNER (For students who began Spanish in Class IX): This course involves the continued study of fundamental grammar structures, syntax, and vocabulary. Students progress from conjugating the indicative mood to introducing the subjunctive mood in the present tense. A variety of media resources help students strengthen their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, while also deepening their cultural understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.

SPANISH II COMPREHENSIVE-ADVANCED (For students who completed Class IX in the Comprehensive-Advanced track): This course continues the study of the language, going into greater depth with more advanced grammar structures using different tenses in the subjunctive and imperative moods and applying them in oral and written communication activities. Students continue refining their foundational language skills and expanding their vocabulary and cultural understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.

SPANISH III (For students who began in Class V): This course enhances cultural competency, focusing on communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) across all modes and tenses, and the reinforcement of advanced grammar structures. Students acquire proficiency in analytical reading and writing through the discussion of current and historical events, literary works, films, journalistic texts, and music. The goal is to promote meaningful language use in context.
