Class XII Classical Languages Course Descriptions

LATIN V: Advanced Latin students read from a variety of authors and topics, which may include The Odes of Horace, the comedies of Plautus, the speeches or letters of Cicero on the trials and tribulations of the late Republic, and selections from Roman historians. In some years, students may produce a comedy for an assembly performance.

GREEK I (half credit; throughout the year): This course offers instruction and an introduction to the fundamentals of Attic Greek. Along with an introduction to the Greek alphabet, the principles of word formation, and rules of syntax, students read adaptations of Aesop’s fables, Homer’s The Odyssey, and the life of Alexander the Great.

GREEK II (half credit; throughout the year): Second-year Greek students continue studying forms and grammar. Students read adapted versions of The Apology by Plato, The Clouds by Aristophanes, and The Histories by Herodotus.
