Class XII Modern Languages
FRENCH V COMPREHENSIVE: This course enhances language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will explore French literature, including novellas and short novels, and analyze media content. They will deepen their understanding of cultural and societal issues in France and Francophone countries through discussion and textual or video analysis. Oral presentations are required.
FRENCH V: This course focuses on the advanced study of classic and contemporary French literature and culture, and the exploration of cultural and societal issues in France and Francophone countries through discussion and textual analysis. Emphasis is placed on speaking, writing, and thoughtful debate inspired by various media sources and classic and contemporary texts. Textual analysis and conversation are key components.
MANDARIN V: This course continues to develop students’ speaking, writing, and reading skills with a focus on formal and colloquial grammatical structures and phrases. They will work on a variety of projects that consolidate the skills acquired in their study of Mandarin during the Upper School years, including reading, writing, and discussion; investigation of popular culture; reinforcement of advanced grammar and vocabulary through creative expression and critical analysis. Students will expand their vocabulary and identify subtle differences between synonyms. The curriculum incorporates personal storytelling projects to hone their public speaking skills.
SPANISH IV COMPREHENSIVE-BEGINNER: (For students who began in Class IX on the comprehensive-beginner track): This course culminates with a thorough review of all grammar structures, including the indicative, subjunctive, and imperative moods. Students acquire proficiency in reading, writing, and conversational skills through films and literary works from Spanish-speaking countries.
SPANISH IV COMPREHENSIVE-ADVANCED (For students who began the comprehensive-advanced track in Class IX): This course marks the culmination of their four-year journey in Spanish. It includes a comprehensive review of all grammar concepts covered from Spanish I through IV. Students enhance their reading, writing, and oral communication skills through daily conversations, enriched by authentic materials such as comic books, literature, films, art, and music.
SPANISH V: Completion of the course of study begun in Class V and a culmination of the study of Spanish through advanced reading, writing, and discussion of selected sources and material from Hispanic literature and visual culture. Refinement of literary analysis, analytical writing, advanced grammar, and oral communication is accomplished by the end of this course.
